Greetings and welcome to the July 2014 edition of Words on the Wind. Due to the size of this month’s Words, we have a Table of Contents for you to reference.
Table of Contents
Hello again! We’re on a bug hunt with some fairly old issues and we’re trying to smash them with data and science. In addition to our previous post, we are also requesting information from players who are experiencing the following:
Logging in from the front page (http://flightrising.com) is not functioning, is taking a very long time, or taking multiple attempts.
If you are currently experiencing this issue, we would love to hear from you. Please join us in this thread and fill out the questionnaire listed in the top post in your reply:
Sorry for all the spam tonight - we’re trying to really track these ones down and fix ‘em up.
We are trying to diagnose an issue that happens sporadically for some users and would like your help in collecting information.
The heart of the issue is that some site buttons become completely unresponsive to input, seemingly randomly. Our hope is to find out why this is happening and that it isn’t random, but something we can narrow down with enough data and provide a fix for.
The buttons in question we’re looking to get information about are:
If this has ever happened to you or is currently happening to you, and you can remember anything significant about when they stopped functioning for you, and what you may have been doing at the time, please contribute to this thread:
Thank you so much!
Hello everyone! We have a couple of new genes that are nearing a finish. We wanted to get some community feedback on what gets released next. Click here to read more and participate in the survey.
Update 2: The site is now out of maintenance. Please play as you normally would. We will continue to monitor its performance. Thank you for your patience!
We believe we’ve found the issue causing the performance drop and are going to put the site into maintenance mode while we correct it. This is anticipated take less than an hour. We will provide updates as we go.
A very happy Independence Day to our US players. Have a safe and memorable day!
Just another quick update that we are experiencing intermittent connectivity with our hosting provider; while the site may be up for some, it could be down for others. We are monitoring the situation and appreciate your patience while the company works to sort out the issues that have been occurring today.
Edit: The webhost seems to be working again. Our apologies as we want for the site to come back online.
The server company seems to be getting its network back online, so Flight Rising should start coming online for everyone again.
Stock quantity on marketplace skins and drop rate on tablets has been increased for the remainder of the festival to help offset the downtime. Thank you for your patience.
Our webhost seems to be having some issues at the moment effecting their entire network. We’re waiting to hear back from them, but for now, connecting to Flightrising.com may be difficult. Thank you for your patience.
Welcome to the June 2014 edition of Words on the Wind! We have quite a bit to cover so let’s get started!
Today we bid our Senior Moderator, @Amalythia, farewell from the mod squad. Amalythia is stepping down to pursue and focus on a creative passion. She will remain a part of our community but as a player, not a moderator.
We would like to express our deep gratitude to Amalythia for all of her support, her leadership, her feedback, her contributions to the growth and guidance of the volunteer moderator team. She has been a joy to work with and while we will miss her presence on the squad, we wish her all the best in her pursuits.
Always wanted to paint your own familiar? We’ve got the contest for you! We are running a familiar coloring contest from June until July 14th Winning entries will become treasure marketplace familiars - show us your color theory, and click here for more information!
In our last registration window, we had 20,000 new users join us. As many were correct in pointing out, this meant Marketplace items would sell out faster. We’ve made two adjustments to the stock rate and will continue to evaluate the supply v demand. We want all of our players to have a fair chance to purchase Marketplace items at their intended price, and will continue to adjust as we monitor the situation.
Our last registration window brought to light several areas of the site that can continue to be streamlined. We hit a performance decrease around 5500 to 6000 concurrent users on all at once last registration - an amazing number, but one we need to prepare around for our next window so that Flight Rising can continue to grow!
We are addressing any bottlenecks we can find to improve and prepare the site for our next window. Hopefully for the next one the baby Snappers will stay in their nurseries so no wires are chewed or fans tied up.
We’d like to take a moment to address something we’ve noticed, something that is happening with greater frequency of late.
The Flight Rising moderator team is a volunteer position. They are not staff, they are not Admin.
We feel it’s necessary to clarify this. Volunteer moderators are not able to respond to reimbursement requests, nor do they have access to the inner workings of account actions or development. Moderators do not set policy, they enforce it at Admin direction/request. If you are having an account-related issue, please use the contact form rather than contacting a moderator, as this is the quickest route to staff who deals with these issues, and to a solution!
A moderator can assist you with moving a thread belonging to you, stickying a thread in a Flight Forum that is relevant and active, diffusing or moderating threads that need it, or help you find the correct avenue for a query.
If you think you’ve found an exploit, cheat, or security concern, please send it directly to us through Contact Us. An exploit is different than a bug, in that it is an issue or event that can be used to artificially gain an edge over players who are not abusing the problem, and exacerbates the situation. Posting security issues forums or social media can make resolution more complex and gives the problem a greater audience, risking the site integrity. Please send security concerns through the contact form, where it will go directly and privately to the staff.
This month’s Spotlight is a little different! We’ve seen some truly interesting or hilarious community efforts this past month and we want to call your attention to them.
First up: Cosplay! @anarin, @setralynn, and @calhale posted a great cosplay on tumblr of the deities. We loved seeing their dedication and creativity and we hope to see more soon! Just look at that Stormcatcher cosplay! You can see more of their work here!
Second: So this happened… There are really no words to describe how we felt when we read through the thread. It is amazing and it can be summed like this:
Thank you for reading, we’ll see you again in Words on the Wind, Volume 6!
